The Icom IC-9700 and the Kenwood TH-D74 rigs are both capable of D-Star digital voice operation. D-Star is a world-wide network of repeaters and reflectors. One may connect to the D-Star network through a local D-Star repeater via RF or via a so-called hotspot. A hotspot is essentially a repeater whose input is RF and whose output is an internet connection to the D-Star network. My Rugged Spot is configured to receive at 433.125 MHz and it is connected to my LAN via WiFi or Ethernet when I am home in the shack. The Rugged Spot may be operated mobile or portable using my iPhone's internet WiFi hotspot (not to be confused with the Rugged Spot hotspot). This hotspot does not have an internal battery, however, and thus an external power bank is required for mobile or portable operation. The Rugged Spot is implemented with a RaspberryPi 3B computer board and an MMDVM modem board. The software that I utilize for this hotspot is PiStar which has a web interface that can be accessed via any computer on my LAN or via a web browser on my iPhone.
