The 75 watt output from the IC-9700 is fed via LMR-400 coaxial cable to an MVV 432 mast-mounted pre-amp and then to a home brew J-Pole antenna. A mast-mounted pre-amp provides the lowest possible noise figure for the receiver as it mitigates the noise introduced by a lossy antenna feed line. The noise figure of the system is essentially the noise figure of the mast-mounted pre-amp. This pre-amp is switched on for reception and off for transmission by a DC voltage generated by the IC-9700 and introduced into the coaxial feedline.
